COVID-19 and air quality - effects and interactions

Against the background of the global COVID-19 outbreak and the increasing number of confirmed infections Europe, a shutdown of all non-essential businesses took place. Besides lower emissions from industries the amount of traffic declined significantly, especially in regions with a high commuter amounts. Traffic is an important source of fine particles, and due to their size and chemical composition they pose a high risk to human health. On a global scale PM has led to >3.3 million premature deaths and has been associated with diseases like acute lower respiratory illness or COPD. Furtherm...

Effect of the Pandemic on Air and Maritime traffic and the Atmosphere (EPAMA)

We will use existing databases to study the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic onto air and maritime traffic and consequently onto the atmosphere. Through this, the socio-economic and environmental impact of the disease can be better understood. This help to prepare for the future. In addition, it helps to understand what impact traffic has onto the atmosphere.

Exploring emerging initiatives for a new societal model

As an NGO promoting the collective intelligence and the technology for citizens, being part of the Open Government Partnership commitment #5 of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and in collaboration with the Univeristy of Luxembourg, we would like to explore 1) The institutional initiatives emerging from the covid-19 crisis and 2) how citizens perceive this crisis and the changes that may emerge from it. The later focus appear to be particularly relevant as past studies have demonstrate that opinions emerging from social media and online forums are increasingly useful to nowcast and forecast th...

Mobile people in times of enforced immobility - Strategies of coping with COVID 19 confinement am...

Covid-19 has changed the mobility reality of (young) people as international borders have been closed. The COVID-19 crisis suddenly introduces words like 'confinement', 'quarantine' and 'self-isolation' does not limit only freedom of movement particularly for those who have not experienced strict border management controls in their life time. The aim of this project is to understand how young mobile people (18-30 years old) experience this period of confinement and how it impacts on their communicational and social behavior. The contrary of enforced immobility and a mobile live are in the m...

Socio-economic impacts of COVID-19: collecting the data

The aim of this project is to investigate the socio-economic impact of COVID-19, including employment, activity and travel patterns, health behaviours and health. The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing in Luxembourg and neighbouring countries. It is currently hoped that due to confinement measures the number of infected persons and deaths will decline in the near future. Public authorities in Luxembourg are considering to relieve the confinement measures to 'unlock' parts of economic and social life in the country as soon as the pandemic is becoming less severe and more 'manageable'. As Lu...

The role of air pollution in transmission and severity of COVID-19

Based on superficial inspection and anecdotal evidence, there appears to be a close correlation between being a hotspot area for COVID-19 prevalence or severity on one hand and air pollution on the other hand. For instance, the highest COVID-19 prevalence region in Italy (Lombardy) is also one of the most polluted areas of the country. This apparent correlation has led some researchers to hypothesise that air pollution may play a causal role in increasing COVID-19 transmission and severity. While such a link is plausible, as COIV-19 is a respiratory disease and as there are well-established...
