The role of environmental factors

The project aims to correlate the international progression of Covid19 as a function of a number of environmental factors: population density, temperature, absolute humidity, and pollution. Other factors may be added as the project progresses.

COVID-19 and the Jurisprudence of Hypotheticals

During the last century, the human race faced several epidemics. Some of them had relatively limited impact on economic, political and social consequences like Ebola, and SARS. Other types of epidemics had major impact on economic, political and social formulation, like 1918 Flu. A question about the impact of COVID-19 is whether will it have limited or major impact on the near future. In December 2019, the COVID-19 starts to spread in the City of Wuhan, China. Scientists were split between two major groups. First, many scientists failed to expect to the widespread of the epidemic beyo...

Construction within a pandemic region, methods and safety measures

The outbreak of COVID-19 has limited many construction activities globally and due to the importance of such activities in civil life, it is necessary to introduce new methodologies and safety measures to be able to pursue those activities under the present circumstances (the quarantine). This study aims to: - Analyze different construction activities including staff behavior under those activities. - Highlight high-risk zones and activities during fieldwork. - Review the used construction protocols during the COVID-19 outbreak (Construction of the recent healthcare facilities). This a...

Distributional impact of the COVID-19 Crisis

The project aims to assess the costs and distributional implications of the COVID-19 outbreak in Luxembourg. It will identify those most likely to suffer from income losses, leading to more effective/efficient targeting of income support measures and improved cost estimates of COVID-19. The lack of timely available data constrains the estimation of the scale and direction of recent changes in the income distribution, which in turn constrain policymakers seeking to monitor such developments. There are huge uncertainties about the budgetary costs and distributional impacts of the outbreak....

Multi-omics evaluation of microbial co-infection as marker of COVID-19 severity -(CO-INFECTOMICS)

The main goal of this project is to understand if SARS-CoV2 co-infections are a predictive marker of disease severity in the Luxembourgish population. To achieve this, the study will compare the respiratory and stool samples of mild and severe SARS-CoV2 positive patients. Using metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, microbial profiles of the respiratory and intestinal tracts will be investigated, with a specific attention for co-infections. Moreover, individual microbial profiles will be correlated to the health parameters and immune response. We hope that the CO-INFECTOMICS project will ena...

Peptide / protein /single-cell map of the renin-angiotensin system in Covid-19

Receptors for entry of SARS-CoV-2 into lung pneumocytes belong to the renin-angiotensin system and disease that are associated to a dysregulation of the same system (e.g.: diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases) are thought to be associated with a bad Covid-19 prognosis. At the same time these receptor are also expressed on cells of the immune system and the immune system is involved in diseases associated to RAS dysregulation. Our project wish to use an integrated mass spectrometry / flow cytometry approach to build a map of the RAS at the peptide and protein level together w...

Docking and binding affinity prediction for candidate small molecule inhibitors of COVID-19 prote...

Currently no vaccine or sufficiently validated pharmacological treatment is available for COVID-19. Drug-based strategies to reduce the viral load in patients with severe forms of COVID-19 include the repurposing of existing small molecule compounds that inhibit the activity of key viral proteins, or human proteins involved in mediating the viral entry or release from the host cell. However, so far, the identified small molecule inhibitors for SARS-CoV-2 target proteins studied in-vitro have significant limitations in terms of their binding affinity to the target, their bioavailability in t...

Responsible AI for Anonymity Preserving Self Evaluation, Reporting and Support System

COVID-19 emergence is affecting personal and communities lives, and also requests for actions to address and reduce such impacts currently and in the future. Complex measures to protect vulnerable individuals, and to support them and law enforcement for the benefit of communities play critical roles in public well-being. Information technologies therefore become critical resources in keeping the balance between surveillance and monitoring while preserving privacy and providing support. This project proposal addresses the need to develop and demonstrate responsible and beneficial collection ...
